I want to be a writer for The Onion. The Onion is so cool. Who wants to read boring old news? It’s all bad, so you may as well make it funny as well.
The Onion is a spoof news site from the US. It has all the things you’d expect in an online service: sports, politics and local news, entertainment, science and technology, even TV news-like video and audio clips. It has a link to a sort of Google maps-esque world with points of interest, entitled ‘Our Dumb World’. I love the entry for Adelaide, Australia – Bar brawl breaking out over who has the best beer ad.
It even has spoof ads are. There’s one for the Onion Personals – “Find someone too good for you” – with an oddly Twitterish background. Or the ad for the Onion Mobile, which just got smaller and more difficult to read.
My favourite story is the one about the Middle-aged centre that provides a safe place for ‘latchkey’ fortysomethings – those who work an eight-hour day and have to go home to an empty house. Tell me about it!
There’s a related site, The A.V. Club, which is dedicated to the entertainment world and contains film reviews and the latest celeb gossip. Oh, it’s all too much.
